Genealogical Oddities (XLIX): C19th Anglo-German Military Musician in Galicia

On 5 June 1806 at Ferrol's parish of San Julián, the chaplain of the Navarra Regiment of Volunteers christened a child Felipe Marcelino, the son of Don Maximilian Chase, musician of said regiment, and Doña Martina Pien. The child's paternal grandparents were stated as José Chase, native of Germany, and Ana María Ulbrich, from Corcubión in Galicia; the maternal grandparents, Pedro Pien and Paula Fernández - she possibly a native of Ferrol, though at this point the entry is unclear. This record was the subject of a delayed entry into the register on 19 September 1825, presumably at the behest of the father; or, perhaps, Felipe had followed in his father's footsteps and was then serving in the same regiment? The entry raises some interesting questions, not least of which is, how an Ulbrich family came to be in the Galician town of Corcubión, and also - assuming the entry is not in error, and that it genuinely was Maximilian and not Ana who was born in Germany - what Maximilian's origin was, given that to the best of my knowledge Chase is not a surname native to Germany.

Genealogische Kuriositäten (XXXI): Eine Pilgerdatei

Ein unerwarteter Fund in der Taufbücher des Dorfes Figueroa in Galizien: Der Taufschein enthält die Taufe von José Simon am 19 Februar 1783, Sohn eines Pilgerpaars, Maria Magdalena Bolschen und ihres Mannes Juan Niderlander (oder Niederlander) – die sicherlich auf seinem Weg nach Santiago waren. Der Ehemann war Soldat des Regiments „Ultonia“ der spanischen Armee und sie wohnten in der Stadt mit königlichem Sitz La Granja von San Ildefonso. Der Taufschein informiert uns auch über die Nahmen der Großeltern des Getauften, die waren auf der väterlicher Seite Bernard Niederlander und Rosina Minguien, Einwohner von Konstanz, Deutsches Reich, und auf die mütterlicher Seite Johann Bolschen y Ana Clara Chlen aus „Treberis“ (das heißt aus Trier) ebenfalls Bürger des Deutschen Reiches.

Among the foreign brides and grooms it would be interesting to know which were long settled in Spain and which were relative newcomers and, among the latter, if the socioeconomic status of any of them would perhaps bear out the idea that they had fled the French Revolution.

Genealogische Kuriositäten (XIV): Eine Deutsche Familie zwischen Madrid und Mexiko

Es gibt Leute die scheinen zu denken, dass man nur seit der Erfindung von Flugzeuge reist und eine internationale Familie zu besitzen gehört nur an moderner Managers. Wir, die Familienforscher wissen es, dass die Realität anders ist. Als Beispiel dient dazu ein Schreiben von 1717 beurkundet von einem Madrider Notar.

Gerardo Adrián Voetz y Villalón, Madrider Einwohner, wollte einige Maßnahmen in Zusammenhang mit der Einnahme einer Erbschaft im Wege leiten. Um genau zu sagen, es geht um die Erbschaft von Juan Palmers Einwohner von Nijmegen, Niederlanden (erscheint im Protokoll als Nimweghem), in wessen Testament am 28. Dezember 1700 sein Vater  Gerardo Voetz - Kölner Einwohner - geheiratet mit Teresa Antonia Hee, (beide im 1717 gestorben) - als Erbe eingesetzt wurde.

Gerardo Sohn wollte anerkennen dass sein Bruder, José Tiburcio Voetz Villalón, ein Recht auf die Hälfte der Erbschaft hat; wer damals als Schatzmeister und Königliche Amtsrichter in der Stadt Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Pachuca in Neue Spanien (heute Mexico) arbeitete.
